I am from Chapel Hill, NC. There are more math teachers in my extended family than any other profession, though my parents were craftspeople. As a child, I spent my days at their store, The Chapel Hill Leather Shop, where I watched them make hundreds of belts, purses and custom sandals. Later on their business turned to jewelry making, much to the delight of my sister and I.
